Hyaluronic acid: three reasons your skin will love you for it

Recently hyaluronic acid (HA) has emerged as somewhat of a beauty buzzword, and not without great reason. It might be ridiculously difficult to say (and, let’s be honest, even tougher to spell), but this active ingredient commonly found in your favourite topical serums, masks, and moisturisers – including our Epiology Advanced Anti-Acne Recovery Mask – is an important addition to your regular skin care routine. Let’s talk about why.

First of all, what is hyaluronic acid?

‘Acid’ may sound like the last thing you want to put on your face, but let’s be clear, HA isn't the type that scalds. In fact, it’s actually a molecule found naturally in our very own bodies. Basically, HA exists in our tissues and fluids - including our joints, eyes, nerves and, you guessed it… skin - with the primary intention of providing moisture. A clever little molecule indeed. But here’s the catch. As we get older our bodies produce less HA. Because of this, our skin loses hydration and starts to wrinkle. This is where topical HA, a synthetic form of the molecule, can step in to save the day.

Here’s why your skin will love you for it

1. Boosts moisturisation

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of topical HA is its ability to keep our skin moisturised. Earlier we mentioned our bodies produce less and less HA as we age. When applied topically, HA sits on the outer layer of the skin and pulls water from the air through its humectant (a fancy word for ‘water-attracting’) properties. The moisture is held there, keeping your skin supple throughout the day. Just like that!

2. Supports anti-aging

Because of its water-pulling qualities, HA is also known to smooth out those creased and crinkled areas we all begin to find in our faces as we mature (cough, *wrinkles*). A small study published in May 2016 found that over-the-counter anti-wrinkle products containing HA decreased the depth of wrinkles around the lips and eyes by up to 20 percent over a three month period. Tightness also improved by up to 30 percent. Hello anti-aging!

3. Helps skin heal

Did you know that HA plays a key role in wound healing? Basically, it controls inflammation and asks the body to build more blood vessels in the damaged area. This is good news for the acne prone, or those of us who get the odd really sore spot. While HA doesn't play a direct role in clearing acne, it is known to reduce inflammation caused by breakouts (especially if you have sore spots that have broken the skin). It’s all about recovery – hence the name of our mask!

HA and the Epiology Recovery Mask

If you’re ready to see the benefits of HA when you look in the mirror (hello supple, youthful, soothed skin!), our Epiology Advanced Anti-Acne Recovery Mask is a fantastic place to start.

Think of the mask as a luxurious facial designed to pamper and restore. Not only does it contain HA as an active ingredient, it also has our patented IDP® ingredient and glycerine. These three ingredients work together as a mighty trio to help your skin retain moisture and remain smooth and soft. Just you wait!

You can purchase the mask in our online shop as a single mask and in a 5 pack, or in selected Unichem and Life Pharmacies around New Zealand.
